What is a poker tournament structure?
The structure is the night's schedule: the list of levels, each with its blinds (small and big), the ante if any and the length, plus the breaks. Blinds go up every level so stacks shrink and the tournament ends in a reasonable time.
A good structure does two things: it leaves enough play early on for real poker, then speeds up so the final table doesn't happen at 4 a.m.
How many chips should players start with?
The chip count matters less than the number of big blinds it represents. A 20,000 stack with a 100 starting big blind is 200 big blinds; the same stack with a 200 big blind is 100 big blinds. That depth is what shapes the game.
- 50 BB or less: a fast tournament with lots of early all-ins, great for a short night.
- 100 BB: the home game standard, room to play without dragging on.
- 200 BB or more: deep stack, for tables that love long games.
The tool above shows the starting depth as soon as you change the stack or big blind.
How long should each level be?
This setting drives the total length more than any other. Blinder's four paces shorten levels as the tournament goes on, with a break between each phase:
- Slow (4-5h): 30-minute levels, then 25, 20 and 15 minutes.
- Classic (~3h): 20-minute levels, then 15 and 12 minutes. The right default.
- Semi-Turbo (~2h): 15-minute levels, then 12, 10 and 8 minutes.
- Turbo (~1h): 10-minute levels, then 8, 6 and 5 minutes. High variance.
The actual length also depends on player count and rebuys: allow a bit more for a big field, a bit less if players bust early.
Big blind ante: why from level one?
Blinder's templates use the big blind ante: every hand, the big blind also pays the ante for the whole table, equal to the big blind. It is now the standard on major tours (WSOP, EPT, WPT). There is one ante to collect per hand instead of one per player, and a bigger starting pot encourages action.
Where should the breaks go?
A 10 to 15-minute break every 1.5 to 2 hours is enough. Use it for a color-up: remove the smallest chips that are no longer needed and swap them for higher denominations. If you offer an add-on, the first break is the classic time to open it.
